I've Been Thinking:Russian President Vladimir Putin has weighed in on a major issue: Muslim girls wearing their headdresses to Russian school.
A major controversy arose when the principal of a school in a southern region of Russia told her students that they may not come to school wearing their headdress, called a hijab.
The teacher received complaints from parents. Then came a series of threats against her.
The Russian president made it very clear that the headdresses do not belong in Russian schools.
The main reason the principal and the president came out against the headdress is not out of discrimination.
Quite the opposite. Russia wants to integrate people into mainstream society and that can only happen through assimilation.
The problem is that forced assimilation seldom works.
