Israel Joins Space Cmt

By Micah Halpern
I've Been Thinking:

Do you know what COPUOS is? I didn't. COPOUS is a UN committee, the Committee On Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

There are 139 member states on the committee and Israel was just allowed in. Entry is usually granted by way of general consensus.

But in the case of Israel, Syria forced a vote. The vote was pretty convincing especially considering that it was a UN vote.

117 in favor, 1 opposed, 21 abstentions. Most of the abstentions were Muslim countries.
There is no doubt that Israel can add a tremendous amount to this committee. Israel has already developed a program for tracking space garbage, especially old satellites. Israel has been involved in space for 30 years.

According to some sources Israel will soon launch its Amos -6 satellite. We are told that the Amos-6 has remarkable upgrades and will be a real addition to communication.

The US and Israel also recently signed a 10 year space cooperation deal. This will allow Israel to be involved in the United States journey to Mars - one of the hottest space projects on the US horizon.
